This week on Screen Grabs: Warm bodies, cold feet, interstellar viral vids and chaos theory in the third dimension. Life finds a way…
This weekend (Nov. 16-18), DIY drug-horror mudcurdler Lowlife screens in 23 cities across Canada (including a stop at Broken City in Calgary). Whet your appetite once more with this “behind the scenes” clip, and visit their site for a full list of screening locations. More importantly, read Fast Forward Weekly tomorrow for a cover story on the film.
World War Z
Thanks to 28 Days Later , monster mash-up novels and meta-zom-coms like Juan of the Dead there are few fresh angles left on the reanimated. However, that hasn’t stopped German director Marc Forster (whose wide-ranging CV includes Monster’s Ball, Stranger Than Fiction and Machine Gun Preacher ) from trying his hand at a big-budget blowout starring Brad Pitt. Fans of the original book by Max Brooks seem split, but from where I’m sitting, it looks pretty awesome.
Zom-rom-com? For another twist on the undead, look no further. This one’s also based on a novel by Isaac Marion, and its premise is great: Zombie boy meets human girl, eats her boyfriend's brain, absorbs his memories, and starts to come back to life. Toss Rob Corddry and John Malkovich into the mix, and I’m sold.
Save The Date
If the critical consensus is to be believed, this Sundance fave about pre-wedding jitters could be the sleeper hit of 2012. One thing I can definitely get behind is how few plot points are revealed in the trailer, along with the reunion of Freaks and Geeks / Party Down co-stars Martin Starr and Lizzy Caplan. Plus, who doesn’t love Alison Brie? Make up your own mind when it hits theatres next month.
Jurassic Park 3D
Hold onto your butts (in 3D)!
We Need To Talk About Kevin may have damaged the rep of the bow and arrow, but if anything can bring it back, it’s a sleek martial arts flick. China’s Xu Haofeng wears the hat of writer, director and editor on Judge Archer , and one-ups Louis CK by directing its fight sequences as well. As if that’s not enough, he’s also responsible for the screenplay of Wong Kar Wai’s upcoming film The Grandmasters . Give this guy the MVP prize already.
21 & Over
Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the writing duo behind The Hangover , make their directorial debut with this legal drinking age raunch-fest. Take this whichever way you'd like, but if frat-dude jokes and racial stereotypes are your bag, this one’s for you. Next!
The Last Stand
Ever wanted to see Arnold Schwarzenegger, Johnny Knoxville and Forest Whitaker in a movie together? Like fast cars, big guns and the Guvernator doing what he does best? Honestly not sure what else I can say here…
Ah, now here’s something interesting. Ecuadorian director Sebastián Cordero helms this sci-fi flick about a deep space expedition to Jupiter’s moon, and there’s some pretty cool viral marketing to go with it. The 36-second teaser doesn’t show much, but it ends with a URL for the fictional company funding the project. There, you can find a 14-minute loop of the ship and crew in action, plus more mysterious password-protected content. In space, no one can hear you stream.
