Pat Maiani has stepped down as executive director of the Calgary Jazz Festival, and up to five other members of the 10-member board are reportedly leaving as well. Maiani couldn’t confirm exactly how many members were resigning — he’s leaving it at “a few” — but he did confirm his own departure.
“I’ve given my resignation, but there’s a six-month transition for us to find someone new to move in,” he explains. “I’ve been at it for 10 years, and it’s a lot of work. I want an easy job.”
Although Maiani wouldn’t say exactly who’s leaving or why (though he speculates that “the whole board thing isn’t as much fun as people think it might be”), sources say it includes the board’s president and vice president. While that seems like a major development, Maiani says the departures won’t have any effect on this year’s fest, which runs from June 21 to 27 and features performances from Chick Corea, Ben E. King, Jesse Zubot and more. As for next year, Maiani is reluctant to speculate.
“The board’s going to be refreshed,” he says. “I’m sure we’ll just take all the best parts of it and keep that going, and whoever the new people are will have new ideas as well. We’ll just have to wait and see how it shakes."
