OK, full disclosure. I tagged this post under the "Sex (18)" category, but it's not about sex. I don't even know if the categories mean anything to my dear readers. Do they even show up on these posts? Either way, it was tagged as such because there was no tag for "webcomics" and because it will be a sexy post.
So, one of my favourite things to do while procrastinating instead of doing "work" for my various "jobs" is to read excellent webcomics. One of those webcomics is Dinosaur Comics by the great Ryan North, who is a computer nerd from Toronto. If you've never read it, you should--it's excellent. You will notice quite quickly that the illustrations never change, but believe me, even if that makes it sound stupid it is so not. It is the opposite.
Recently, North did a Comics Battle thing with the Cartoon Lounge guy at the New Yorker. This isn't the first time something awesome has piqued my attention on that particular blog, that would be the back-and-forth with Chris Onstad (who draws/writes another of my favourite webcomics, Achewood) about who could open the best sandwich shop in their home. It was off-beat and awesome for the most part.
Anyways, you should go check out the Cartoon-Off. North's comics are hilarious because he actually tries to draw and he didn't get the "memo" about the fact that they should involve dinosaurs, which has some hilarious ramifications. My favourite is North desert island, which cracks wise on the English language.
The ones by the New Yorker guy are so-so, but what bugs me is that the guy is a terrible interviewer. This struck me during his exchanges with Onstad and it's especially prominent in his conversation with North. It's like those Jon Stewart interviews (last night with Steven Chu was a great example) where there's zero substance because he keeps derailing potentially interesting conversations by trying to squeeze in some sophmoric bit of humour. Don't get me wrong, I love the Daily Show and Stewart is capable of doing great interviews, but when he drops the ball, it drops hard.
