The City of Calgary's green cart pilot program appears to be successful, with participants diverting 17,000 bags of compostable garbage from the landfill in the past three months.
In March the City gave green carts to 7,500 residents in Abbeydale, Brentwood, Cougar Ridge and Southwood for its Green Cart Food and Yard Waste pilot project. Since then, household waste is down 40 per cent in the pilot communities.
The final report from Waste and Recycling Services will come out in March 2013. After that, city council may decide to initiate a city-wide curbside compost program.
