You could hear the political pundits, bloggers and Twits' thoughts begin to swirl when the latest Wildrose Alliance media advisory came across the wire yesterday afternoon.
"Danielle Smith will be making an important political announcement about the Wildrose Alliance Party on Thursday, April 29, 2010," stated the notice.
Had another Conservative MLA crossed the floor? Was Smith going to finally unveil who financed her leadership campaign? Would she quote a research paper written by someone other than the Fraser Institute? Did Tory deserters Heather Forsyth or Rob Anderson cough up some substantial dirt about their former party and embarrass the premier while he was in Calgary?
Well, the answer was a resounding 'no' to all of the above. In fact, the "important political announcement" coming out of the Wildrose camp, which has made a ridiculous habit of declaring every semi-important membership purchase like it was the second coming of Christ, was to show off its latest acquisition: Hal Walker.
Thud.
Who is Hal Walker? He's a former PC strategist and Tory president for Calgary Elbow. He also supported Jim Dinning's failed leadership bid in 2006, but after three years with Stelmach at the helm, Walker's convinced the premier and the party have lost their way. Now he's the WAP's interim party president. TA-DA!
"Change is coming to Alberta, and many current PC MLAs know very well they are going to lose their seats," Walker stated in a press release. "The time has come for all of us to stand on principle, not misguided loyalty, and elect a competent small-c conservative government in the form of Danielle Smith and the Wildrose Alliance."
So another Tory, bitter about the fact his guy didn't win and that the guy he didn't support wouldn't heed his advice, has joined the right-of-God party that will undoubtedly lead the province back to the Promised Land. The land where oil and gas men get filthy rich and eat dolphin sushi (it's delicious), while everyone else suffers from high fuel prices, crappy restaurant service and driving behind 4X4s with truck nutz. Can't wait.
The best part of this flaccid announcement? It's now trending on Twitter in hilarious fashion under #waptopstory. And deservedly so.
UPDATE: OK, it's not "trending," but it's still bloody funny.
