It's a little confusing — at least to me — when Alberta goes from posting surplus after surplus to facing a $6.9 billion deficit.
Natural gas revenues are down, yes, but remember that in 2006, this same government actually handed out money, sending $400 cheques to every Albertan (costing the government $1.4 billion). As well, earlier this year the province eliminated Albertans' health premiums, cutting about $1 billion in annual revenue.
During Finance Minister Iris Evans's press conference today, I asked her: wouldn't that money come in handy now?
