In March, CBC announced it was cutting 800 jobs across the country. Now we know more details on how the cuts will affect CBC Calgary.
Longtime radio host Jeff Collins is one of three people at the plant taking an early retirement as a result of the public broadcaster's cuts.
Acting station manager Diane Humber says Collins will retire at the end of June. "We'll have a fitting send off for him," she says. Former Newsworld anchor David Gray will then take over the hosting chair on the Radio One afternoon show, The Homestretch.
News reader Cathy Little is also taking an early retirement, as is Rod Wood in the graphics department. All three, Humber says, were eager to take retirement packages. "They volunteered to go."
Humber says CBC has also issued seven "redundancy notices," eliminating the following full-time positions in Calgary:
— one producer job in radio/TV news
— one job in radio music
— one job in radio drama
— one job in French radio
— one job in communications
— two jobs in TV technical
Some people working the eliminated positions may end up in other CBC jobs because of seniority, but Humber says it's too early to say who will be leaving which positions.
Two managers are also leaving the station because of the cuts.
