Tonnes of Guns

Sorry fans of influential east-coast hip hop crew Gang Starr, you've been had. This is actually a post about videogames! Zing!

Galactic Arms Race (or GAR) is a nifty little computer game designed by the University of Central Florida's Evolutionary Complexity Research Group, which they describe as "Space Diablo." What makes GAR really interesting, though, is that it uses the gamer as an input variable in a procedural generation algorithim that, basically, designs all of the weapons the players can pick up in the game automatically, with no input from the designers themselves. So, when you pick up a new gun for your space ship, you have a limited number of inventory slots, and will have to discard an old one to make room. The game client tracks what sorts of guns are discarded, and which sort are used the most, and then uses the data to produce weapons that people will want to play with (There's a liberal-arts-major-friendly explanation of how the system works here). Though in most cases the technology seems to be used to generate the prettiest looking laser blasts, this video does suggest some much cooler possibilities:

It's all pretty simple right now, but it can only get more complex and more interesting as people play it. The (free!) game client takes a little geeking about to install, but there are some very explicit step-by-step instructions on the website here. So go! Go play! Play and be merry (and shooty)!
