The Goodtimes

The Goodtimes

Club Paradiso

July 31, 2010

The Goodtimes is proof positive that anything really does go at the Fringe!

Without wanting to give too much away, let’s just say I didn’t enter Club Paradiso (one sexy venue, in my opinion), expecting to hear songs about pissing on dead rats or seeing a woman come on stage dressed in a puffy, pink vagina costume. (Yes, you read that correctly.) To be frank, I didn’t really know what to expect. The Fringe program describes The Goodtimes (named after the husband and wife duo who stage the show), as an “electro-vaudeville spectacle,” whatever that means. Well, it’s one crazy little show that features, frankly, dirty topics set to catchy, upbeat tunes, as though singing about donkey punches is the most mainstream thing in the world.

Add to that a robot that sings, called “Bleeps,” and laser beams streaming into the audience as the Goodtimes take off into space for a show at the futuristic Galactadome, and you’ve got one really weird show.

It’s fun, it’s upbeat, it’s energetic, but the content definitely makes it not for everyone.

I actually did enjoy it, in spite of my shock at some of the stuff they did, mostly because performers Ian and Lindsay Goodtimes (apparently, their real names!) are likeable, and all the songs have a great beat. My advice? If you’re adventuresome enough to check this one out, don’t take Grandma.
