Reviews to help you through the hit-or-miss loveliness that is the Calgary Fringe Festival

On Second Thought

On Second Thought, Artpoint, Sunday, 1:45

Paul Hutcheson is endearing and funny. On Second Thought is a relaxed trip through his life (a popular theme at the Fringe). He dares to intersperse his prepared work with conversations with the audience — a scary move at times I imagine. It works to get people involved and laughing with him. This was a good audience, so all went well.

The stories cover his accidental youth soccer slide into a pile of dogshit to his various jobs (including renting porn to eager customers in Toronto).

He laments the lack of positive gay role models in his youth, but proclaims his love of Wham!

This is, so far, one of my favourites. It felt carefree and had the audience laughing along the whole time (despite the still furnace-like conditions of Artpoint).
