Reviews to help you through the hit-or-miss loveliness that is the Calgary Fringe Festival
Drunken Fucker, From the Ground Up (old Garry Theatre), Friday, 10:00.
This show was not what I was expecting. With a name like Drunken Fucker, I was anticipating a funny romp through good natured booziness. This show is not that. It's a sometimes-difficult-to-watch autobiographical breakdown of the descent into alchoholism by the protagonist — a great performance by Sean Bowie (who's also the playwright).
The show is funny at times, but you spend the humourous moments just wondering what train wreck is around the corner — and train wrecks there are.
The lighting, though limited (it is the Fringe) is used well and the music by Jay Crocker keeps the play moving.
Don't let the title throw you off, this is a show worth checking out. But don't sneak booze into the theatre, you'll feel bad about yourself.
