Almost time again for Rodeo season — you know, the other one, the one that doesn’t smell like livestock and manure.
Erin O’Connor, managing producer of the High Performance Rodeo, officially unveiled the 27th annual line-up of the coming international arts fest, which runs January 3 to February 3 (2013).
And there’s definitely some stuff to be excited about. On the theatre front, I’m most looking forward to a co-presentation between Theatre Calgary and Iceland’s Lyric Hammersmith and Vesturport Theatre — Kafka’s Metamorphosis.
The nightmarish story of man’s transformation into a bug is reportedly “spellbinding,” and features aerial action and original music composed by Bad Seed’s Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.
The show is part of this year’s Icelandic Programme, which will also feature Sonic Waves, a co-production with the Calgary Folk Music Festival that sees local up-and-comers like Samantha Savage Smith teaming up with Reykjavik musicians, visual art by Hekla Dögg Jónsdóttir at Truck, and the movement art of Freya Bjorg Olafson’s Avatar.
Other international participants include: Look Mummy, I’m Dancing, a monologue about a 60-year-old transsexual woman by Belgian artist Vanessa Van Durme; Sclachter-Tango, by Germany’s Theatrelabor and starring One Yellow Rabbit’s Andy Curtis, which is a one-man show about the persecution of Jews and homosexuals in Germany; and Ireland’s ponydance, who will take over random locations throughout the city where they’ll bust some moves.
In terms of Canadian content, a few highlights are: Alberta Theatre Projects co-presenting Daniel McIvor’s autobiographical “fantasy,” This is What Happens Next; Alberta Ballet presenting Up Close; One Yellow Rabbit’s premiere of People You May Know; and Victoria’s Atomic Vaudeville rolling out Ride the Cyclone.
Plus — the return of the Walrus Talks, +15 events, weekly noon-hour performances at the Church of the Redeemer, the 10-Minute Play Festival, and much more dance, theatre, and visual arts.
