Poet Laureate nominations

Attention poets who know it: the deadline for nominations for the Calgary poet laureate is coming up quick — this Tuesday, January 10 at 4:30 p.m., to be precise.

In addition to the prestige of the position, wherein the poet laureate acts as a cultural ambassador for the city and composes verse for official city functions, the chosen nominee will be awarded a $10,000 honorarium. (Set that iambic pentameter to the rhythm of ka-ching!

Although self-nominations are acceptable, if you’re best work is on the bathroom stall door at the Ship, you’re going to have to sit this round out until your portfolio is in better order. Nominees must be “a professionally published or presented literary or spoken word artist, be a current resident of Calgary, demonstrate an established career through their body of work, or have made significant contributions to their community, regardless of length of career.”
