The arts community is celebrating after Calgary city council approved a $5-million funding injection towards an arts centre in Calgary.
Council voted unanimously to contribute the funds towards transforming the King Edward School into an arts incubator with affordable spaces for the community where arts and organizations can utilize the space artistically.
Calgary Arts Development is proposing to restore the 100-year-old school into an arts hub.
Arts community members are ecstatic with council's support, including Juliet Burgess.
"I know people have been pushing for these funds for awhile and their efforts have not been ignored," she says. "Having the city's support means a lot to people in the arts community."
Council also approved on Monday $10 million towards a movie production centre, that Burgess believes will make it fair game to compete with other cities for film production.
