Slow Food Calgary is putting on a weekend of food-centric events April 29 to May 1.
The first part of the event, Local 101: Ingredients for a Sustainable Culture, takes place at the Uptown on the 29th and 30th.
It’s a mini-film festival and a celebration of all things local including the environment, the food and the farmers. The goal is to promote a better public understanding of everything that goes into making sustainable, local food.
Four food-related films will be shown: DIRT, Burning Water, The Vanishing of the Bees and The Economics of Happiness.
There will also be two panel discussions. One will involve local food producers, both urban and rural. The other will talk about the factors that play into a food system including soil, water, pollinators, nutrition and economics.
The event will also include two speakers. Thomas F. Pawlick is the author of The War on the Countryside and The End of Food. Hugo Bonjean is the author of Seeds of Germination or Termination and A People’s Power.
The second part, Local 201: Alberta Small Farms Summit, takes place at the University of Calgary on May 1st. This summit will explore small farmers including who they are, what they’re doing and where they’re headed.
The afternoon will include an overview of the incoming provincial Land Use Framework presented by the Land Use Secretariat. Producers and growers are invited to participate in the peer review process.
Everyone is welcome to come and learn about small farms and local food and participate in these food discussions.
