After being involved with Vertigo Theatre for 11 years as a performer, director and artistic director, Mark Bellamy says the 2011—2012 season will be his last with the company.
“It has been both a privilege and an honour to help lead this company and maintain the legacy of those who came before me in this role,” Bellamy says.
“This was by no means an easy decision to make but I feel that this is the right time both for myself and for Vertigo to move forward into the future.”
Bellamy says he doesn’t have anywhere to go — yet — but he feels he is leaving the company at a time when it’s in very healthy condition, both financially and creatively.
“I don’t know what is next yet in the future, that's the big question. It’s scary and exciting but I’ll just have to see where this leap of faith will bring me.”
Bellamy is excited for the last production of the season, which will be Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Feet Street.
He says he will miss the people the most when he leaves in June 2012.
“Not just the staff and the people on the stage and behind the scenes, but the audiences, too. They are a very loyal and supportive audience,” he says.
Robert Phaneuf, chair of the Vertigo Theatre board, thanks Bellamy for his dedication.
“Though we are sad to see Mark leave us, we look forward to finding the next artistic leader of this remarkable organization.”
