Bashing biases

F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S. Fabulous, darling.

Bash'd: The Gay Rap Opera (yes, I did say gay rap opera in the same sentence) is a blend of laughs, perhaps some tears and even some head-bopping.

Chris Craddock and Nathan Cuckow created Jack and Dillon, whose alter rap egos are Feminem and T-Bag, manage to break down biases while challenging stereotypes. The two created the characters and the music and premiered it at a gay nightclub in Edmonton in 2006. Like all things Cher in the gay world, it became an immediate hit. Fast Forward (ffwd) five years and you have the gayest rappers you’ve ever seen playing for High Performance Rodeo audiences in Calgary. For the second-year in a row.

Rapping about young gay men who fall in love sounds a lot harder than the two make it look, but their performances were so genuine you almost wonder to yourself if they are telling their own life stories. Either way, the message is clear and the audience gladly-received it. Erupting into applause time and time again, the final performance ended with a standing ovation by the adoring audience, even if it was a little over the top. But, that’s okay.

Without giving too much away, this is something people should experience for themselves whether straight or gay, homosexual or homophobic, drag queen or fag hag or just “asexual.”

The show debuted Wednesday night but will play until January 29 at the Vertigo Studio Theatre. If you haven’t seen this show yet you should check it out, because the wildly talented Cuckow and Craddock may soon be hanging their angel wings and glitter and passing the Bash’d torch on.
