Wildrose and abortion referendum

According to a blog post by an email sent to Jane Cawthorne, a Calgary blogger (you should read her post) and the author of The Abortion Monologues, the Wildrose Party supports sending contentious moral issues, including abortion, to a referendum.

Fast Forward Weekly has not been able to confirm the authenticity of the email and is waiting for Cawthorne to return a request for further information.

Cawthorne writes that she sent this question to all major political parties vying for seats in the provincial election:

Redford changes mind on MLA compensation

Premier Alison Redford, after weeks of criticism, has changed her mind on retiring MLA transition payments and payments made to PCs for sitting on a committee that hasn't met since 2008.

In a press release from the PC war room, Redford said: "All Progressive Conservative MLAs will be expected to pay back every penny of money received from the Committee that has not met since 2008. Any MLAs who do not will not have a place in my Caucus.

"Further, the overly generous transition allowances paid to retiring MLAs are suspended from this day forward and I will not accept a transition allowance, win, lose or draw."

It's a significant reversal but it comes too late. It will also likely ruffle feathers in the PC caucus.

City gets feisty (not the musician)

P3 Rec Centres in Calgary-24-Nov-11

Hell hath no fury like a politician scorned. Even our diplomatic mayor has his knickers in a bunch today and one alderman actually dared to ask the question: what do our Conservative MPs really do for us?

The reason for this little political uprising is the denial of funding for three rec centres in Calgary through a federal public-private partnership fund. The federal funding would have covered 25 per cent of the cost of the projects, a significant sum of money ($99 million).

Adding insult to injury, the city already tossed out $3.1 million just to apply for the grants and was apparently assured that the proposal was on its way to approval.
