No pants C-Train ride Sunday - someone please help Cacophonists!

This Sunday, January 9, marks the Global No Pants Subway Ride. The brainchild of New York City's prank collective Improv Everywhere, the event's origins date back to 2002. Since then, it has become a bit of a global phenomenon, and in 2009, over 1200 people participated in New York with another 1000 people participating in 21 cities around the world. This year, 49 cities in 23 countries are participating in the event.

Where's Calgary in all this? Well, the Calgary Cacophony Society is organizing this year's event, and participants are encouraged to ride the C-Train sans pants. The only problem is that as of Friday afternoon, only one person, Cacophonists, has signed up for the event (well, online at least). From the bottom of our heart, we beg … Read More

The Sergeant - Alberta politicians do have a sense of humour

Created for the annual Alberta Legislature Christmas gala, this short film was recently published on YouTube. Not much more to say about this, really, except that Danielle Smith is really good at push ups and her "Public health care kills babies" might just be Oscar material.

Brian Eno vs Calgary vs David Bowie

Ok, I just have to say this because it's a pet peeve of mine and this is a preemptive strike. It's great news that Brian Eno will be this year's Artist in Residence at the 2011 High Performance Rodeo. The guy's a genius. He's done it all: visual artist, musician, producer, etc.

But let the record show, Brian Eno never produced a David Bowie record! He's produced lots of people (U2, Devo, Ultravox, Roy Orbison, etc) but he often erroneously credited with producing Bowie's "Berlin trilogy" (Low, Lodger, Heroes). These three great records, all of which Eno contributed as a songwriter and musician, were produced by long-time Bowie producer Tony Visconti.

There. Now I've said it. I think I feel better.

Rockies for brains

With the summer tourists gone and the ski season still a few weeks away, this is a great time of year to head to Banff. It’s easy to forget the beauty of the town simply because during the high tourist season, many of us avoid it.

Here’s a couple things to look out for.

Affectionately known as “The Castle,” the Fairmont Banff Springs is in many ways the heart and soul of the town. Opened in 1888, the hotel’s history is rich in stories, including ghost stories. On Thursday night, The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies is hosting a cool Halloween lecture, How haunted is The Fairmont Banff Springs? Presented by former bellman David Moberg, the lecture is only $2, and will be sure to include the legends of Sam the Bellman and the dancing bride.

Concerned Christians: "Ric needs you"

Committed to "speaking out and bringing the truth of God's word to bare on all aspects of society and life," Concerned Christians Canada has sent out an email urging Calgarians to support Rick McIver in the upcoming civic election.

The email is surprising for two reasons. The attacks on Barb Higgins are oddly superficial, but more surprising is the fact that Concerned Christians don't seem to be aware that it's a three horse race, and there's this guy named Nenshi in contention.

Here's the letter. Judge for yoursef.

Goodbye Energy, hello KOOL

These days commercial radio is a tough game. In June Vibe switched over to Virgin Radio Calgary making some modifications to its format.

This afternoon at 1:01 p.m., Energy 101.5 FM announced that it has switched to KOOL 101.5 with a new “Hits From Today & Back In The Day” format. The station promises to be “fun” and “energetic” with personalities that are “real.” OK, sure. Maybe the formula will work for a mainstream audience, but couldn’t they come up with a better name that KOOL?

Here is a nugget from the station’s formal press release sent out earlier this afternoon:

About KOOL 101.5

Calgary’s new Kool 101.5 is a mainstream pop hits station, serving a primarily female audience, and playing Hits From Today, & Back In The Day. The station is fun, energetic … Read More

Bernard Callebaut has just announced that the company is in receivership. In a press release issued this morning, the company states:

"Due to economic circumstances receivership was the only option available.  While this was certainly not an avenue Bernard chose, and through thorough consultation with advisors and extensive consideration of all other alternatives, the company was forced into this action."

Brian Eno exhibit to visit Glenbow

While the folks at One Yellow Rabbit are being tight-lipped about the programming for their 25th annual High Performance Rodeo in January, the Glenbow Museum has announced that Brian Eno’s exhibit 77 Million Paintings will be on display as part of the Rodeo.

Best known as a musician, composer and producer, Eno has made a career of working with the likes of Roxy Music, U2, Coldplay and Talking Heads. His exhibit, described by Eno as “visual music,” is an evolving sound and imagescape.

A full description of the show can be found on the Glenbow’s site.
