SXSW: Grimes gets, er, grimy

If Montreal's Grimes has stage fright, as she indicated in an interview with Fast Forward's Jesse Locke earlier this year, it certainly didn't show in Austin. Performing in a near-headlining slot at Pop Montreal's final showcase on Saturday, Mach 19, she unveiled her ghostly, dense dance songs to a crowd that, as her performance continued, ebbed closer and closer to stage. And, as attendees of her recent show at the Marquee Room— not Tubby Dog, as I erroneously state in the interview, perhaps after a few too many Lone Stars — could attest, hers is a rare performances that captivates both dancefloor and imaginations.

(Although, as her interview indicates, she might be inching closer to dancefloor bangers in the future).

Here, we caught up with her after her set to talk about Benny Benassi's bass and the delights of being a SXSW hype act. Also, she's touring with Doldrums, who we spoke to earlier in the fest. And they'll be performing each other's songs! Score!
