Speaking with several Canadians here — journalists, bands and regular ole concert-going types alike — there seems to be a consensus: Despite being knee-deep in the biggest, and most diverse, music festival in the world, we're the most amped about seeing the bands we might catch at home: The Canadian groups.
That speaks to a particular bias, perhaps, but there's also an intensely talented Canuck contingent in Austin — M for Montreal, the Halifax Pop Explosion and Vancouver's Olio all hosted region-specific showcases — and that's largely thanks to the efforts of Dan Seligman, founder and creative director of Pop Montreal. Some of the best emerging and established acts have been programmed by Seligman: Montreal-via-Calgary's Braids plays tonight's Pop showcase along with saxophone madman Colin Stetson. They hosted Hollerado's Nacho House. And then there's Little Scream, Suuns, Sean Nicholas Savage, Grimes, and well, countless more (as seen here). Really: We came to Austin to see international acts. But it's hard to top the above list.
Indeed, Seligman and his crew have had plenty of work, but plenty to be proud of, too. On the brink of its 10th year anniversary, we picked the brains of Seligman on the difficulties of hosting showcases at SXSW, the programming philsophy behind one of the nation's most established and well-respected festivals, and what he expects of this year's iteration of Pop Montreal. The early word? Expect to see the U.K.'s Raincoats and Redd Kross. Swoon.
