An editor's ramblings on anything I damn well please

Nice try Herald

I'd just like to point out for the record that I don't go chasing down Herald stories to fill my pages.

According to Stephen Hunt in the Thursday, June 4 entertainment section, the dancing man (see the video here) was basically made famous by the Herald, sending all other local media outlets scurrying to catch up with the paper’s mighty investigative skills.

"Following the front-page article in the Herald on Wednesday... Colin Wynter arose to discover he'd become a media hot potato...." writes Hunt. “…Wynter received phone calls from Breakfast Television, Global, CBC and Fast Forward weekly [sic].” It says so right there in the paper, so it must be true.

Actually, I posted the video to fflog on Tuesday after seeing a link on twitter, and then went down to Ming and met Wynter face-to-face. We were going to make him our profile in Your Face Here. But, alas, such is the life of a weekly, the Herald beat us to the punch.

And then there’s the fact that the Herald dedicated a chunk of their seven pages of entertainment coverage to say how awesome they are. That’s a strange thing to fill space with. I could understand if they broke some in-depth story about corruption, or a sex scandal, or a horse that gave birth to a two-headed colt, or even if they won a prestigious award for any of those stories, but what the hell man? A dude dancing on youtube?

We're not featuring Wynter as our Face anymore, because the Herald put him on the front page. That's a far cry from sniffing after the Herald entertainment section.

So go nuts Herald, and blow your own horn. Just stop telling people that I was there to watch.

I think it just goes to show how desperate this city is to latch onto anything that gets attention. You're exactly right. It IS just a dude dancing on youtube. What I find amusing is the fact that FFWD was thinking this was newsworthy in the first place. Desperate times I guess.

We weren't thinking that it was newsworthy, but thought it would make for a funny Your Face Here, where we profile someone people see about town and ask them a few questions. Certainly weren't thinking about making it a front page and then featuring it the next day as well.
Actually not desperate times in terms of content. The desperation comes from not being able to cover all the amazing things that are happening in this town. Too many great events etc... get passed over, through no fault of their own.

Haha, thanks HeavyMetalHeathen. I'm sure there are others missing, and definitely a lot of one-off events that I was referring to in my comment. I'm not going to name all of those.

Holy Dinah. I believe I wrote "Great" events, not a just a list of corporate sponsored events that fit into the conservative Calgary manifesto. Just being sour. I am kinda pissed still that this city is blowing 25 mill to build a bridge that looks like that 80's Rubik's Snake. And, before I get assaulted about making a difference to further the cause of this city's cultural and entertainment, let me assure you both that I'm far too lazy to do that. I just like bitching about it. Although I do go see a lot of metal bands.

Yeah, because the stereotypical "conservative Calgary manifesto" is all about gay pride, and people celebrating their native cultures, and spoken word poetry, and performance art, and documentaries about the excesses of the oil patch, and experimental animation...

What would you consider a "great" event, anyway?
