Next up on the festival hype roster, two of the noisiest, sweatiest, most intense live bands you're likely to come across. Both have come to Calgary before, but that's no reason not to check them out again at this year's Sled Island. But neither is for the faint of heart.
First, Monotonix. Listening to this Israeli three-piece's CD, you can pick out elements of classic rock mixed in with the driving punk, but live, they're definitely more GG Allin than Thin Lizzy. Not that you should be expecting blood, guts and fecal matter — just a band that's more than happy to engage with their audience by climbing over them, stealing their drinks and refusing to let anyone stand on the sidelines. They played Broken City around New Years, and there was literally a wall of steam at the door from all the jumping around.
This clip dubs one of their album tracks over the video, but it gives a good enough idea:
As for L.A.'s HEALTH, I've heard them described as everything from "unlistenable noise" to "the FUTURE" (picture that latter one spoken with wide-eyed amazement). They're certainly abrasive. Focussing more on primitive rhythms and shocking bursts of noise, they're about as far from listener-friendly as I can really imagine.
So, why am I recommending it? Because their live show is one of the single most intense performances I've come across, and that in itself is an achievement. And because, as random as it all may seem, they bury songs beneath all the noise. And, because one of their songs has a pretty swell video, too:
