Horror fans, take heed: Burning Moon Video, Calgary’s dedicated purveyor of all things ghastly, ghostly or just plain trashy, is presenting Dario Argento’s Deep Red this Thursday, February 4 at 7 p.m. at the Plaza. Though the giallo master is probably best known for Deep Red’s followup, the ballet, blood and witchcraft classic Suspiria, Red is still among his best, full of the patient and brutal death scenes that Argento fans love.
When the weekend arrives, your best cinematic bet is to head west — The Banff Centre has imported the best of Vancouver’s Doxa Documentary Film Festival. With subject matter ranging from wildlife tourism in Africa to the female hip hop underground and the dark side of Borat, there’s something for anyone with a shred of curiosity about the world.
If you’re stuck in Calgary, though, you’re still not without options. The Calgary Cinematheque Society continues its invaluable French New Wave series with Alain Resnais’s Last Year at Marienbad on Saturday, February 6 with a high noon screening at the Plaza. As with the rest of the series, the screening will also feature a discussion of the film’s origins and impact, this time led by the University of Calgary’s Lee Carruthers.
You might as well stick around the Plaza for the rest of the day, too, because it’s following the Cinematheque screening with the penultimate in a series of Coen Brothers double-features. In addition to A Serious Man — one of 2009’s best films — they’re also screening the stoner-noir masterpiece The Big Lebowski. If you miss it on Saturday, then Wednesday, February 10 will be your last chance to catch the nihilists, pornographers and carpet-pissers of one of the all-time most quotable movies around — at least until the next Lebowskifest rolls around.
Lastly, February 9 is also the second Tuesday of the month, which means it’s time for the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers’ monthly classic film screening. So far no details have leaked regarding what they’ll actually be showing, but the combination of slightly sketchy but oh-so-comfortable couches and consistently well-chosen films is hard to resist.
