CIFF Capsule reviews - George the Hedgehog

Sept. 28, 11 p.m., Plaza Theatre

Imagine, if you will, a cross-breed between The Simpsons’ Itchy & Scratchy Show’s skateboarding dog Poochie and Sonic the Hedgehog. Sprinkle in a little Fritz the Cat, and therein lies George the Hedgehog, a wise-cracking party dude who leads this animated feature from Poland.

George comes off like a caricature of party dude antics from the ’90s, with a backwards cap and rock ’n’ roll attitude that could have been spawned from the same boardroom as Fido Dido or Cool Spot. Fortunately, this goofy archetype comes with a wink from the filmmakers, as evidenced by the Bart Simpson images and nudie mags placed into a cloning machine in the opening scene.

From there, the film follows George’s sordid adventures as he gets it on with big-chested women — if you really think about it, it’s a lighthearted approach to bestiality — and gets nice and hammered. Some mean-spirited henchmen add some minor depth to the plot, but this movie is about the cartoon badassery more than any kind of heavy-handed story.

If you like mammary-loving mammals that recall the ’90s heyday of offensive cartoons, then George the Hedgehog is right up your alley. It’s not exactly Fantasia, but an animated feature film for adults is always a welcome change of pace.
