CIFF Capsule review - Brilliantlove

Wednesday, Sept. 29, 9:45 p.m., Eau Claire

Randy romcom Brilliantlove grabs you by the lapels and sets the tone straight off the bat, with an outdoor sex scene playing out as the opening credits roll. The eyebrow-raising continues throughout, with the most full-frontal nudity, lovemaking and self-pleasuring (both male and female) on screen since Shortbus. However, unlike that infamous Toronto titillator, the ill-fated romance at the core of this U.K. indie leaves a lasting impression.

Akin to Sid and Nancy minus the heroin and murder, or Eagle vs. Shark with more shagging and less costumes, this slacker love story follows an amateur taxidermist, Noon, and her laze-about boyfriend, Manchester. The young pill-popping couple’s predilection for naughty photography starts as the spark, but when a sloppy drunk Manchester leaves an envelope of prints in a pub, they end up in the hands of an erotic art dealer. Inevitably, like so many VH1: Behind The Music specials, the temptations of fame and money quickly complicate everything.

Set to an energetic, NME-friendly soundtrack featuring Heavy Trash, Wild Beasts and Metric (ugh) — with Del Shannon added, for a dash of class — Brilliantlove is sharp, fun and saucy. While the peaks and valleys of its storyline can be predictable, the film makes up for it with solid comic-dramatic acting and laugh-out-loud dialogue (though somewhat obscured by thick accents). This sarcastic back-and-forth between Manchester and the not-so-secret square art dealer perhaps sums it up best: “Dre was right, ‘Life ain’t nothin’ but bitches and money.” “Dre? Who’s Dre?” “Just a bloke.”
