Turkish delights, secret cinema

There’s more to film this week than just CUFF

The Calgary Underground Film Festival is always a highlight of Calgary’s film calendar, but it’s not the only worthwhile movie event this week. It’s not even the only fest. The Globe Cinema is hosting a tribute to Turkish film, which actually kicked off on Tuesday, April 6. There are still two films to go: The Little Apocalypse, an award-winning psychological thriller from 2006, which screens on Thursday, April 8, and 2003’s Children of Secret, about homelessness and drug addiction in Istanbul, screening on April 9.

Outside of the festivals, the weekend still holds plenty of goodies. The Plaza is offering double-features of Shutter Island with Taxi Driver, so if you want to see the contrast between Scorsese in his prime and his still-pretty-decent self, this is as good a chance as any. Really, any chance to see Taxi Driver is one worth taking, and seeing it on the big screen can only up the grit. Plus, if you missed them last week, there are still a couple screenings of The Muppet Movie and Labyrinth left; go to theplaza.ca for more info.

Meanwhile, that central hub of Calgary’s independent film scene, the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers, is offering up two essential events. First up is the Lights! Camera! Action! workshop, taking place over two days on April 10 and 11. If you’re seriously thinking about shooting your first short, or even a feature, they’ll go over the basics, from lighting to camera work and film stock.

Second, the more passive of the two events — though still quite awesome — is the monthly classic film screening. Held on the second Tuesday of every month at the Society’s Sofa Cinema, the films are always a secret, but that’s half the fun. This month, you’ll get a Canadian feature about “sex, politics, infidelity and friendship” (aren’t they all?), plus popcorn and the best theatre seats in the city. Visit csif.org for more info on both events.
