For those who missed our article last week, the biggest deal in theatres right now is Sled Island Film, running from June 24 to 29 at the Plaza. Festival programmer Jeanette Burman is putting on a “festival of festivals,” recruiting the Hidden Gems Film Festival, the Marda Loop Justice Film Festival and more to celebrate Calgary’s growing cinephile community.

The fest kicks off on Thursday, June 24 with Do It Again — One Man’s Quest to Reunite The Kinks, a self-explanatory title and a worthy cause if ever there was one. That’ll be followed by the Canadian première of Texan drama Skateland.

Friday, June 25 is the fest’s exploitation night, with screenings of American Grindhouse and the classic Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! It’s not all glorious gore and camp, though, as the day kicks off with the latest in the Prairie Tales series.

Of the Saturday offerings, the two best bets are probably No Fun City, a look at the conflicts between Vancouver’s city council, developers and the musicians and concert-goers who have been fighting gentrification in the city, and The Adventures of Spaghetti Cowboy, the short that’ll precede the feature-length 1234. No Fun will feature a panel discussion and an after-party at Broken City, while Spaghetti has Feist in a fake moustache. Both sound like winners.

The last half of the fest isn’t shy on potential highlights, either. The fest will feature two packages of Academy Award-nominated shorts — the animated ones on Sunday, June 27 and live action on Tuesday, June 29. Strange Powers: Stephin Merrit and The Magnetic Fields, which screens on Monday, June 28, will take a look at one of the most consistently endearing songwriters around, and features a screening of the Deerhoof short Band, in which the indie-noise band takes on Godard’s Rolling Stones doc, Sympathy for the Devil.

There’s plenty of other films, too – head to sledisland.com/film.html for the full festival lineup.

Outside of Sled, The Uptown will host a screening of cellphone awareness doc Full Signal on Saturday, June 26. The filmmakers have talked to scientists, activists and journalists around the world who are calling attention to possible health risks from cellphone tower placement — definitely an issue worth examining.
