Short notice, but the Film and Video Arts Society (FAVA) and the National Film Board (NFB) present a master class with director and producer Daniel Cross on Saturday, August 4 in Edmonton. Cross founded EyeSteelFilm, a Montreal-based documentary production house and will be in town to talk about social activist filmmaking. Three of Cross’s films will screen at the Metro Cinema on Friday and Saturday night to coincide with this event — the first in a series of master classes featuring Canadian film professionals sharing experiences and insights on various aspects of the industry.     On Wednesday, August 8, the Afrikadey! Festival presents a screening of We Are Together, or Thina Simunye, at 7 pm at the Plaza Theatre, 1133 Kensington Road N.W. This uplifting theatrical documentary tells the story of a group of children living in South Africa who use music to overcome hardship and loss.     The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF) is looking for a Communications Co-ordinator. There is a lot on the plate for the successful candidate, including community engagement, public relations and internal organization.     In association with CUSO, The Calgary Reggae Festival presents the Rasta on Film Series on Tuesday, August 14 and Wednesday, August 15 at the Cardel Theatre, 6010 12 Street S.E. Films include Roots Rock Reggae – Inside The Jamaican Music Scene, a documentary that examines reggae music’s evolution in the late ’70s and One Love, the story of a Rasta man who falls for a gospel singer after they meet at a music contest.     The feature film Walk All Over Me, produced by the Calgary film company CHAOS, will receive its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this fall. Booked as a part of the Canada First! program, this project was co-written by local heroes Jason Long and Robert Cuffley, who shared writing credits on Turning Paige, and was directed by Cuffley.
