We're sorry, but not guilty for bird deaths: Syncrude

Company says it will outline its rationale in court

While Syncrude says it’s sorry that 1,600 birds died on one of the company’s toxic tailings ponds last year, the company is apparently not apologetic enough to admit guilt in court.

Syncrude is pleading not guilty to federal and provincial charges resulting from the incident, but the company is keeping mum on its rationale. “Out of respect for the judicial system, I'm not able to outline why we have taken this position,” said company CEO Tom Katinas in a statement. “We will provide our reasons in court.” Syncrude’s trial is slated to begin next March in St. Albert, Alta.

D'you know, (and I am not trying to make a legal case here), Murphy's Law applies here. You open a Tailing Pond, and make it look like a lake, complete without adequate warning sounds--and not erect hazard warning signs in Duckese--the ducks will land! If even THIS law applies(and is enforced, more to the point) in Alberta-- and God knows we cannot assume--with a degree of conscience, this multinational conglomerate should be expected to acknowledge the minimum.
Will anyone ask about human health impacts, I wonder?
