Sunshine considers Canada Day opening

'You sort of come out for the party and the novelty of it'

It’s not a late April Fool’s Day joke. It doesn’t prove global warming is a hoax. In fact, it may not even happen.

But a record-setting snowfall in March and April has Sunshine Village operators considering opening a select number of slopes for skiers and snowboarders on July 1.

Sunshine last opened its hills on Canada Day 20 years ago. A heat wave could derail the event, but a final decision is expected late June. Prices will likely be reduced for the one-day event.

“You’re not going to have outstanding skiing,” says Sunshine spokesperson Doug Firby. “You sort of come out for the party and the novelty of it.”
