Suncor sues Greenpeace for $1.5M

Amount covers 'a variety of things, including lost production,' company says

Suncor is suing Greenpeace for $1.5 million in damages after 23 activists with the environmental organization snuck onto the company’s site September 30, blockaded two conveyor belts and broadcast live video of the protest over the Internet.

The company filed the suit as part of its effort to get an injunction barring Greenpeace from Suncor property. Company spokesperson Sneh Seetal says the $1.5 million covers “a variety of things, including lost production.”

Greenpeace campaigner Mike Hudema says the Suncor lawsuit won’t stop his group’s tactics. “I think it’s a moral imperative that everyone who can stands up to these types of toxic industries and says ‘no,’” he says.

Greenpeace is also being sued by Syncrude for $120,000 over a protest on that company’s tarsands site last year.
