Premier Ed Stelmach has blocked a Calgary company from doing seismic testing for bitumen under a pristine northern Alberta lake.
OSUM Corp was planning on firing loud air cannons under Marie Lake, which is just north of Cold Lake near the Saskatchewan border. But Stelmach hit the brakes September 5, announcing the testing will not happen because of safety and environmental concerns about underwater bitumen extraction.
“We’re all very happy,” says Chris Goss, who has been going to his parents’ cabin on the lake for 42 years. However, Goss says Stelmach’s announcement didn’t go far enough because he didn’t rule out the possibility of bitumen exploration happening later at Marie Lake or other nearby lakes. “We think we’ve won this battle, but we haven’t won the war,” he says.
