Sparks fly as attempt to delay Plan It vote fails

Council also spikes attempt to block Memorial Drive closure

An attempt to delay city council’s June vote on Calgary’s long-range development plan got spiked May 11 amidst sharp accusations of petty politics.

Ald. Diane Colley-Urquhart headed up a motion to delay the Plan It Calgary vote until September, but Mayor Dave Bronconnier said the vote had to happen in June since council previously approved a timeline.

In another heated debate, council voted against shelving a plan to dedicate two lanes of Memorial Drive to non-vehicular traffic one Sunday in August. A group of aldermen moved to block the plan, but it was voted down 9 to 5. “This is trivial,” said Ald. Druh Farrell during the debate. “It’s petty. I find it insulting to Calgarians.”
