Safer cycling

Ride the City offers guidance for two-wheeled treks

Calgary’s cyclists now have a tool to help them navigate the city’s tangled bike lane and pathway system. Ride the City is a free online mapping system designed for cyclists and brought to Calgary primarily through the efforts of volunteers from the non-profit organization Bike Calgary.

Bike Calgary vice-president Richard Zach says people who are new to commuter cycling in Calgary will benefit from being shown the safest route to take their bikes from point A to B, which is what Ride the City is intended to do.

The service began in New York and already exists in several other American cities. Details can be found through Bike Calgary or at ridethecity.com/calgary. It is also available as a mobile app.

This website is crap from what I can tell. I asked it to find me a route from home to work, just to test it out. All three routes it chose were inefficient. Google maps, on the other hand, selected the route I always take, which is the much more efficient (and safe) route. Not sure about the app being free as this article states, either. It's $1.95 for androids. I'd recommend google map's free service instead - you can get directions for biking, walking or driving.

And sometimes Google will give you a crappy route. No routing service is perfect. But if you report the inappropriate route on Ride the City, it'll be fixed in a week. Google won't do that. It won't even give you the option of requesting a safe route. So please report the route to RtC or infrastructure@bikecalgary.org

Even better, I can show you how to fix the problem yourself. If you post a link to the crappy route, we can go from there.

p.s. the article actually says the the online service is free -- which it is (ad-supported). Both platform's mobile apps are $2, I believe.

Note that RideTheCity is distinct from BikeCalgary -- we've "just" been improving OSM data.
