Alberta Health Services has ordered a chicken slaughterhouse in the southeast community of Ramsay to clean up its waste-disposal procedures.
After a health inspector at the Lilydale plant discovered pooled blood under disposal bins, inadequately secured waste and chicken feet scattered across the plant’s yard, it was deemed dangerous to public health.
Nearby residents have long complained about blood and waste leakages, foul odours and chicken parts strewn throughout the neighbourhood.
“It’s certainly a step in the right direction,” says Barry Robinson, an Ecojustice lawyer who worked for the Ramsay residents. “There are still other issues that need to be addressed around odour, noise and emergency response plans.”
Waste material transporters, International Compost Ltd. and West Coast Reduction Ltd., were ordered by the province to stop transporting leaking bins and to properly train employees
Lilydale has until August to rectify the problems. The plant is also under investigation for two separate ammonia leaks that occurred last year on September 13 and October 24.
