Protest Bylaw Rejected

Calgarians reject move to muzzle dissidents

A plan by city bureaucrats to curb public protests at city hall was shot down by a city committee. In a 5-2 vote, aldermen sent the proposal back to administration to be rewritten and requested the Charter of Rights and Freedom be considered, says Ald. Ric McIver.

The proposed bylaw would have required protesters to get a permit and insurance. It banned pamphlets, leaflets, newspapers or magazines from being handed out.

It was one of the few issues that united the public, says McIver. “It speaks well of our city that people from all across the spectrum all agreed on one thing, is that they’re not willing to muzzle even their opponents.”
