'Plants get it on,' MLA tells colleagues in Bill 44 debate

Politicians discuss sex and religion into wee hours of the night

Alberta MLAs stayed up into the wee hours of the night May 26 talking about sex and religion.

Liberal MLA Kevin Taft gave his colleagues a brief biology lesson in the legislature. “Plants get it on,” he said before lecturing on hermaphroditism.

The MLAs were debating Bill 44, the government’s controversial proposal to amend the human rights law so that parents can opt their kids out of classes on sex, religion and sexual orientation. “We thought this [proposal] was one that we could put through without offending too many,” Culture and Community Spirit Minister Lindsay Blackett told Fast Forward Weekly.

The government amended the bill so it says “human sexuality” instead of “sexuality,” but opposition MLAs were unsatisfied with this and other amendments. They unsuccessfully tried to get the opt-out section of the bill struck out entirely.
