NEW COURTS BUILDING TO OPEN

Trading sandstone for glass and imperiousness for functionality, Calgary’s long-overdue courts building is set to open September 5. The 7th Avenue skyscrapers, next door to the current youth court, will house the Court of Queen’s Bench, Court of Appeal and parts of the Provincial Court in an environmentally friendly new building. The city has needed the building to replace a number of smaller locations. The pair of 20-storey towers cost $300 million to build.
The building was initially slated to open this week, but the date had to be pushed back in order to fix a malfunctioning security system. The security system allows doors to be locked electronically and security personnel to monitor the building with 800 cameras.
