Liberal ad targets new Wildrose leader

Fledgling party denounces online video as 'sleazy'

As speculation about Alberta’s political future abounds, newly minted Wildrose Alliance leader Danielle Smith is being targeted by an ominous online ad that lumps her in with conservative overspenders like George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan and Premier Ed Stelmach.

The 50-second Alberta Liberal ad features scary-sounding music and photos of the leaders along with their deficit figures, then cuts to a photo of Smith with the caption: “Can we afford another ‘fiscal conservative?’”

Liberal leader David Swann denies it’s an attack ad. “It’s an attempt to expose… misinformation from certain parties that want Albertans to believe that they have the corner on financial management.”

The Alberta Liberals are still struggling to pay off $300,000 in debt. “I’m not saying that we’re perfect,” says Swann. “I’m saying let’s look at the evidence around conservative ideology and so-called fiscal conservatism.”

Smith couldn’t be reached for comment, but Wildrose spokesperson Shawn Howard calls the “American-style” ad “sleazy.” “Frankly, I think we would all expect a lot better out of Dr. Swann…. Every time they run this type of stuff, it just shows how much more desperate they’re becoming.”
