Liberals call for more cops in wake of Calgary murders

Alberta’s funding formula for police is out of date and must be updated in the face of violent crime in Calgary, says the provincial Liberal Party. Currently, the province has the third-lowest number of cops per capita.
“We haven’t had a change in funding in 10 years. Is that same level of funding adequate? No,” says Mo Elsalhy, a Liberal MLA from Edmonton. “(The Conservatives) just pretend they’re tough on crime, but you have to put words into action.” Elsahly is irritated that the Tories are holding forums on making communities safer but not committing the money to make it happen. He says the province has to hire more police and help police departments work together.
The Liberals are making the accusation in the wake of a bloody week in Calgary that saw three gun battles, a deadly hit-and-run outside a nightclub, a teenage boy killed by a C-Train, two men murdered in a garage and two women turn up dead in the city’s east end. In total, eight people were killed.
