LGBT centre needed: report

Researchers identify gaps in local services

Calgary needs a new community centre specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, according to a new study from Calgary OutLink.

The report, written by a social work professor at the University of Calgary, says there’s a gap in local services available to LGBT people. Researchers surveyed 230 local LGBT people online as part of the study, and nine of 10 respondents agreed that a community hub is needed.

“Calgary doesn’t have an area, per se, for the LGBT communities to feel a certain amount of safety, and also just a freedom to be them in their relationships,” says Melissa Luhtanen, president of Calgary OutLink. “A community centre is one solution.”
