Indigenous groups condemn big oil

Calgary’s oil and gas sector is getting a lashing from indigenous groups in Alberta and Peru.

Peas Peas Ayui, leader of the National Achuar Federation of Peru, travelled to Calgary to condemn Talisman Energy’s expansion of operations in the Achuar people’s traditional territory in the Peruvian Amazon region.

The Achuar are strongly opposed to Talisman’s plans to expand seismic testing and drill more exploratory wells in their territory.

Shell Canada, meanwhile, is the target of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation. The chief and council rallied outside Shell headquarters in Calgary and served notice that they intend to sue the company for failure to meet contractual obligations over existing oilsands projects within their territory.

The ACFN claims that the company failed to live up to its promises to mitigate environmental damage and address environmental issues. The company is planning on expanding its operations in the area.

Talisman and Shell did not return Fast Forward Weekly’s phone calls.
