Health waffle

Premier Redford is beginning to waffle on her campaign promise to hold an inquiry into allegations of doctor intimidation by political officials.

In a press conference following the October 26 legislative session, Redford said an inquiry may not be necessary. She suggests legislation the government intends to introduce this fall will increase the authority and independence of the Alberta Health Quality Council. The Council is currently reviewing the situation. It is expected to make its findings public in February.

During question period this week, Health and Wellness Minister Fred Horne repeatedly stated the government is not going to act until the council makes its report. However, he also confirmed, “this government is committed to a fully independent inquiry.”

Finance Minister (and former Health Minister) Ron Liepert has made his opposition to an inquiry clear. Liepert contends an inquiry would be a waste of time and money, and would ultimately find nothing.
