Grand theft auto: Calgary

A gun-wielding man led police on a marathon chase on Sunday May 25, robbing two people and a tanning salon before fleeing in a succession of carjacked vehicles.

The crime spree started around 4:10 a.m. when the suspect allegedly pistol-whipped and robbed a man at Bromley Square in the Beltline. The next robbery took place around 10:40 a.m. at Fabutan on 17th Ave. S.W., where a man made off with a small amount of money and stole a car.

Over the next two hours, the suspect allegedly stole six more cars and a delivery truck as police chased him across the city. The last car, which was stolen with a 75-year-old man in the passenger seat, was stopped at a Pembrooke elementary school, where a suspect was arrested.

Richard David Barker, 27, has been charged with 10 offences ranging from robbery to pointing a firearm in connection with the robberies and carjackings.
