Digging up the past

Parks Canada archeologists are busy analyzing the bounty collected throughout July from a site in Banff National Park.

“We started to realize the site was fairly special because it had evidence people we thought just lived on the plains were actually living in that area of Banff,” says David Ebert, manager of cultural resource services for Parks Canada.

Just off the rail line, west of the Banff townsite, site 951-R was prioritized because erosion was threatening the artifacts. Archeologists extracted arrowheads and other artifacts from the 2,000-year-old Besant culture.

After measuring, weighing and cataloguing the artifacts, the team will attempt to ascertain why these bison-hunting prairie dwellers were in the mountains. Ebert says one hypothesis is the Besant followed bison to this area, which could have been flat land 2,000 years ago.
