Council shelves redevelopment projects

More public consultation needed for Ramsay Exchange and Sandy Beach

Aldermen have delayed approval for two major redevelopments — a billion-dollar makeover in Ramsay and a redesign of a popular southwest park — until after the fall election.

The Ramsay Exchange, a $1.1-billion plan that would transform 8.5 hectares of industrial land into a mixed-use, high-density, pedestrian-friendly community, stalled after council decided public consultation was lacking. Approval for the redevelopment likely won’t happen until fall.

Torode Commercial Ltd., the lead developer of the revitalization project, was hit hard by the recession, declaring bankruptcy earlier this year. Other investors are reportedly still onboard.

Meanwhile, upgrades to a green area in the community of North Glenmore near the Elbow River, which includes Sandy Beach, Britannia Slopes and River Park, were put on hold after several community stakeholders voiced concerns they weren’t properly consulted by the city. The city maintains it talked to 18 groups and held several open houses over the past year. Proposed improvements included upgrading pathways, stairways, fencing and additional parking. New public consultations are slated to start in November.
