Two Calgary police officers have been charged with assault after a 46-year-old man of “no fixed address” alleged the two off-duty cops roughed him up, cut his forehead and broke his rib in the stairwell of the Calgary Police Service (CPS) administration building downtown last month.
Constables Dino Izzo and Roland Stewart were both charged December 19 with assault causing bodily harm. Both have been suspended with pay. (Izzo has been with the service for almost eight years; Stewart for two.) Insp. Ken Marchant says the two cops were headed to the building’s gym area in the basement November 6 when they encountered the complainant, who was sleeping in the stairwell. (Police won’t reveal his identity.)
Marchant says police received a complaint immediately after the incident occurred on November 6. “We took immediate action on it,” says Marchant. The CPS launched a criminal investigation into the incident and forwarded the results to Alberta Justice, which recommended charges be laid.
Both Izzo and Stewart are scheduled to appear in court January 18.
