Government cancels health conferences

Taxpayers will be paying for province's decision

Alberta taxpayers will be paying for the province’s cancellation of several health conferences — all part of the restructuring of Alberta Health Services.

And it will be an extremely expensive bill, according to one conference organizer who doesn’t want to be named, fearing repercussions. “You don’t organize these things in a week. You book venues a year in advance and you put deposits down.”

Bruce Conway of Alberta Health Services says most conferences, including ones about mental health, healing and chronic disease prevention, are likely just being postponed. “We will know more after the summer.”

He does admit, however, “There could be some work cut out for some folks,” if the conferences are once again given the green light.
