City to look at local food policy

Administration will draw up recommendations

Guerilla gardeners and other green thumbs are celebrating after city council took first steps toward creating a local food policy for Calgary.

Council directed city administration to write a policy in keeping with an earlier city plan that calls for more city support for community gardens and local food producers. “Council has made, in my mind, an incredibly wise decision,” says Paul Hughes, chair of the Calgary Food Policy Council. “It just makes sense on so many levels.” City administration has been told to prep the report by next June.
